Living Laws

Oresteia by Aeschylus discusses what it is that pulls one to follow specific history, traditions, laws, etc. In the modern day, everybody is expected to follow the constitution, but not everybody does. This is because a strict interpretation is harmful to progress.

Laws should definitely be living, as we cannot live under a strict interpretation. The idea of living with a strict interpretation of the US Constitution sounds incredibly scary. In my opinion, the living document was set in place for us to follow as a society, but not necessarily under a strict interpretation. If we were to live under a strict interpretation, we would never progress in any aspects of life. Obviously, the Bill of Rights were created out of necessity. With the creation of the Bill of Rights, amendments that were put in place allowed for society to progress. Living under a strict interpretation would go against this idea of progression. In modern times, it is unthinkable to live under a strict interpretation of the Constitution. The Constitution was made to help give structure to our government and society as a whole, but this was in 1787. Our society has, and will continue to grow over time, so it is necessary to continue to amend this document that was made in a different era. The constitution is important, but it is only relevant if we keep it updated to where we are as a society. History has proven that some laws outgrow the times, and changes are necessary. Overall, following the constitution as it was originally written didn’t work, and amendments were necessary as time continued on. If we were to literally follow the constitution as it was originally written, many points would not be relevant to us today.
