Tradition is a word that many associate with value. When considering continuing a tradition or breaking a tradition, one often contemplates the value within the tradition in question as a way to justify a decision. Tradition is rooted in routine, but a routine that serves a valuable purpose. Tradition walks a fine line when teetering between the idea of routine and restriction due to the progress of time and generational ideologies. The meaning of tradition can be viewed as valuable or restrictive depending on the context and personal perspective.

Following tradition is typical of human behavior, and families often take their ancestors’ wisdom, traditions, and lives with them as time goes on and generations pass. Though generational differences should be accounted for, we are a continuation from our ancestors. Our ancestors continuously influenced families generation after generation in their family dynamic, traditions, superstitions, etc. To be reborn with each generation lacks an understanding of past history, and everybody uses knowledge from the past to make it in the present and future.

History tends to repeat itself, but I would not say it is completely cyclical. To assert that history is a definitive cycle implies that it cannot be broken, but not everything will be the same as it once was. With each generation comes new ideas, practices, politics, events, etc. We are able to utilize history to understand the way these new things work, but in the same token, we are able to utilize history to ensure similar things do not happen.
